Overcoming a child's fear of the dark takes patience. When a child is afraid of the dark, it can be stressful on the parent, but on the child as well.
Yet, there is a way to overcome this fear in your child if you just follow a few simple steps.
Nervousness and crying along with insomnia is a form of an anxiety attacks and should be dealt with in a caring and supportive manner.
You want to build up their confidence so they can conquer this fear, and be able to handle other stressful situation as well.
Remember, patients always helps in times like this.
You need to let them know that it's normal to be afraid of the dark, and most kids go through this at some point in their development years.
Next, I believe you should comfort your child, and let them know that monsters aren't real.
Assure them if it's not real, then it can't hurt you.
Then, (if it comforts them) let them sleep with their favorite super hero toy or stuffed animal.
If it persist start asking questions, make sure they are not afraid because of hearing ghost stories, watching a scary movie, or for something his/her sibling may have done
Use positive enforcement on making them sleep in their own bedroom.
Get them a night light for their bed room, and read them a book before bed.
Last, if you have to lay in bed with them for a few minutes at night, or at least until they fall asleep.
Go ahead and do it.
With any luck, eventually they will no longer be afraid of the dark. If they do seek help from a therapist.
As an adult they could develop a phobia.
